Max baranet '59 burst - his own personal guitar!!
Update on the Max!
Whilst in contact with Max, I asked him would it be feasible that the components removed from the Slash/Max guitar (that he used for the first two/four weeks for the Appetite for Destruction) would have then been fitted to this guitar, it being Max's next build and his own personal guitar.
"...Yes, Its very possible that I put Slash's PAFS in the next guitar, as I built both of these guitars for myself and would have put my favourite PAFS in it.. I probably put all of Slash's parts on it."
Max, has E-mailed us to say that he built this guitar, as his own personal guitar to replace the Maxburst with a 60's neck that he sold to Slash for use in the recording of the Appetite For Destruction album. As has been well recorded on various sites, those vintage parts were removed and Max has said its probable they went into the build of this one. Serial number
9 3XXX, she has an "old growth" Honduras mahogany body with Eastern maple top and "old growth" Brazilian rosewood board with original nitrate inlays. The pickups are genuine PAF's and all parts and hardware are from the 56-60 Gibson years. The Gibson hard case is from 68. The colour looks cherry sunburst in the photos but she is a typical teaburst with a slight lime streak near the toggle switch. More pictures will be added later. Purchased from Norms vintage guitars in California, 1988, by a Chris Moore, who then sold it to the current owner in 1995. Max himself has verified all the descriptions.
The pick ups are double black PAFs, the neck is nickel screws non PAF logo, I believe this is a early '57 and reads 7.73K. The bridge is brass screws with PAF decal, I believe '58/'59 and reads 7.7K. The non wire abr1-bridge and light weight aluminium tailpiece with long studs are also original '58-59.
Peter Max Baranet, now retired, was one of America's elite guitar builders. He made a name for himself in Hollywood as a guitar builder and customiser. He is the builder of Slash's (Guns 'N' Roses) 'Appetite for Destruction' Les Paul and the builder of the legendary 'Hunterburst', once owned by Steve Hunter and Slash.
Max Baranet had built for other legendary guitarists such as;
Eric Clapton, Eddie Van Halen, Nikki Sixx, Zakk Wylde, Lenny Kravitz and Billy Gibbons (ZZ Top) to name but a few.
* The burst we refer to as belonging to Slash, was the second one (the one used for the first 4 weeks for appetite for destruction), NOT the hunterburst.
Many, many thanks for Matt Jacobs of Narcosis Pictures for these amazing photographs he took!
